NOVA-KOMP Technology (of composting/ biodegradable waste aerobic stabilization) was developed in cooperation with the Technical University in Koszalin, it is based on years of experience of AK NOVA company in terms of design, implementation and start-ups of installations of biodegradable waste biostabilisation
The project was elaborated under the academic auspices of Prof. XZ, PhD. Eng. Robert Sidełko who developed theoretical model of the system. Our employees analyzed the work of the majority of existing composting systems in Poland in terms of their performance, functionality and cost efficiency. We took into account all the advantages and disadvantages to develop to our own, optimal solution. As a result of studies we elaborated two models: composting in bioreactors and in hall, which in a short time were implemented in Rudna Wielka (Chemeko System) and in Słajsino (Purposeful Association of Municipalities R-XXI based in Nowogard). At the same time, in response to numerous inquiries from investors, several variants of the proposed solutions were developed which included specific needs in terms of location and technology. Basic bioreactor variant of the NOVA-KOMP is based on optimal aeration of biofraction from technological and operational point of view which is achieved by air forcing into the bioreactor with simultaneous suction of purified post-processing air into biofilter.
NOVA-KOMP system ensures requirements' fulfillment in terms of the Regulation of Minister of Environment dated on 11th of September 2012, Pos. 1052 on the Mechanical Biological Treatment of Mixed Municipal Solid Waste (MBP Regulation).
AK NOVA company provides that the correct execution of the process will allow to achieve technological effect. After intensive stabilization, material should be formed into windrows on the square, where maturation will be performed. During this process material should be irrigated and moved, for example by the turner or charger.
In all technological variants it was assumed that the optimal retention time of the waste in the intensive phase is a period of three weeks. Depending on the characteristics of the material and the process, the time can be shortened or lengthened.
In hall system, material is piled up into windrows and shifted by the turner - hall is one bioreactor divided into sections referring to each windrow. In bioreactor system each bioreactor is a separated installation connected with common systems of control, leachate drainage, irrigation and air purification. The system can also operate as installation for waste combustible fractions (RDF) drying.
The particular modules are equipped with the sets of fans controlled manually or automatically which ensure appropriate process parameters. In bioreactors, apart from exhaust of post-process air, the spraying devices are included - they are also treated as an element of fire protection system. Settings of aeration and air reception system ensure maintenance of a slight negative pressure in the chambers (bioreactors), where accelerated process of decomposition is performed, which eliminates uncontrolled emission of odors. Negative pressure forces also the movement of air in bioreactors.
To ensure deodorization of flue gases, post-process air is treated in the biofilter filled with biological material. Purification is achieved due to biological processes of oxidation and reduction. This process can be extended by the system of wet scrubbers with acids and bases’ dispensing.
Our proprietary solution is aeration of the material through the channels covered by concrete slats. Developed especially for the NOVA-KOMP technology construction of the slats provides very big active surface in relation to entire floor. At the same time adverse events are eliminated, such as clogging of the ventilation holes, corrosion, mechanical damage (dents, cracks), channels’ clogging. The type of foundation ensures effortless channels’ opening and cleaning. According to our experiences we claim that it is sufficient when cleaning is performed once a year. Our systems provide reliable operation in all weather conditions (we have positive experience in terms of working in winter and summer conditions). Assurance of trouble-free operation is possible by using the highest quality equipment and materials and due to assembly performed by highly qualified workers.
For the proper conduction of the process, air pollution reduction and fulfillment of guidelines included in MBP Regulation, it is expected to perform a two-stage process of composting / aerobic stabilization:
intensive process in concrete bioreactors (chambers) for a period of three weeks (our offer refers to this phase)
maturation process on the concrete square for a period of four weeks
It was assumed that intensive process will last constantly three weeks, during this time material will be shifted which provides its aeration. The decision to shift the material is taken by technologist who takes into account the analysis of process’ data. To improve functionality, we recommend the implementation of extra space (additional windrow or technological bioreactor) for the collection of waste. The total height of bioreactors should not be less than 5 meters, which provides easy operation of devices at composting plant. In shifting process it is recommended to use a specialized turner, adapted to the size of windrows, which will ensure regular distribution of water and oxygen in the windrow and will allow to increase active surface of material in the process of decomposition under aerobic conditions.
To control the dynamic of processes occurring in the material subjected to aerobic stabilization, it is predicted to use bayonet thermometers and organoleptic humidity test. Control of the process is performed by changing working parameters of the fans and the change of the material’s humidity.
For the implementation of the recovery process in accordance with MBP Regulation, it is necessary to install rotary screen. Waste produced in biological treatment processes can be used for recovery (fraction 0-20 mm). The fraction 20-80 mm (separated at sieve) may be a component for the production of RDF or may be used in other way – for example it can be treated as energetic material or a structural material turned back to the process.
The process executed in described way will allow to fulfill existing regulations regarding the quality of the final material after composting / aerobic stabilization.
